Parents Indicted In Mercy Killing Case
ST LOUIS, MO
A grand jury handed down indictments yesterday in the case of Jamie Halsbrener, a disabled teenager who was murdered in 2005 in what has been described as a mercy killing.
Both parents of the girl, Samuel and Dorothy Halsbrener, have been indicted for solicitation of a murder for hire. They are said to have hired Nathan Kessler, a veterinarian with a mobile practice, to "put down" their daughter.
Jamie Halsbrener suffered from a yet unnamed disability that required constant care from her parents, who ran a mail order crafts business out of their St. Peters home.
The parents have acquired the services of different lawyers. While no comment was obtained from Pat McNamara, the lawyer for the husband, the attorney representing Dorothy Halsbrener, Thomas Schneider, has issued a statement to the press. His client has pleaded with the public to withhold judgement until all the facts of the case are made known.
